When “Good Enough” Ruled Industrial Thinking

The industry has been doing things a certain way for a long time. They had a rule: if something worked today, then that was good enough. Factories were trying to get bigger and bigger. They were putting in machines as fast as they could. The industry had to make decisions. They usually picked materials because that is what they always used, not because they were the best choice. The industry, like factories, was just trying to keep up with demand. The industry was not really thinking about what would happen with the materials they selected.

Steel that was familiar felt safe. If it had worked before, it was used again—without asking how it would behave under constant pressure, heat, or exposure over time. Stainless steel existed, but it challenged the comfort zone. It asked industries to think long-term, and at that time, long-term thinking wasn’t always rewarded.
